This free lunchtime webinar is designed specifically for personal injury solicitors and will explore how maxillofacial evidence is used to assess causation, prognosis, future treatment needs, and the long-term impact of facial injury and disfigurement.
The session will consider how maxillofacial opinion translates into litigation evidence, including mechanism of injury, reconstruction pathways, functional versus aesthetic outcome, psychological sequelae, and future treatment needs.
Facial trauma and post-traumatic disfigurement can be among the most complex areas of personal injury litigation. These claims often extend beyond the initial injury to include surgical reconstruction, functional impairment, aesthetic outcome, psychological impact, revision treatment, and long-term prognosis.
For claimant and defendant solicitors, the medico-legal evidence is critical. Cases may turn on whether the pattern of injury is consistent with the index accident, whether delay or suboptimal management affected the eventual outcome, and how the expert distinguishes accident-related deformity from pre-existing or unrelated features.

Mr Rory O’Connor
Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Mr Rory O’Connor is a Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Major Trauma. He undertakes medico-legal work in personal injury and clinical negligence claims, providing expert opinion on condition and prognosis. His medico-legal practice includes facial injury, facial trauma, major trauma, maxillofacial surgery, oral surgery and post-traumatic facial deformity. He began medico-legal work in 2022 and examines claimants of all ages from his consulting venue in Nottingham. His clinical practice focuses on the surgical management of facial trauma, post-traumatic deformity and complex oral and maxillofacial conditions, including reconstructive surgery. This gives him a practical understanding of the issues that commonly arise in litigation, including mechanism of injury, causation, functional impairment, aesthetic outcome, revision treatment, psychological impact and long-term prognosis.
